Minerva McGonagall has been on Earth for quite a while. She has seen quite a lot happen in her time. Not all of it has been pleasant. Minerva has seen the Dark Lord rise and fall, only to rise again. She has seen innocent people die, murdered before her eyes. She has seen good people's hearts and souls go to waste as they allied themselves with Voldemort.
One thing Minerva never thought to see was a Death Eater (for indeed, that is what they are called, Voldemort's minions)striving for redemption. Had anyone asked Minerva, Death Eaters were vile, souless beings, not fit to be called human. And for the most part, she would have been right. However, most Death Eaters were not Severus Snape, former Hogwarts student. Minerva had actually taught the boy! He had been one of her brightest students! To think that he had stooped so low as to ally himself with Voldemort was repulsive to Minerva.
