Dad: "Don't go downtown; [people are] smashing windows all along Yonge Street."
Sarah: "LOL, of course not. I'm not an idiot."

Ten minutes later, at Michelle's house:
Sarah: "Hey, Michelle, my dad explicitly told me not to go downtown because people are smashing windows on Yonge Street."
Michelle: "I see."
Sarah: "But now I really want to check it out!"
Michelle: "Hell yes!"
Sarah: 8D
(Survival instincts are things that happen to other people.)
Starting around Charles St, storefront windows had been smashed willy-nilly. The shops on College Park had been wrecked; Starbucks, Swiss Chalet, and some small businesses hadn't escaped the damage, which is fucking ridiculous, because what the fuck, what did rotisserie chicken ever do to you? And the business owners who aren't making a lot of money - even if they have insurance to cover the damage, their insurance payments are going to skyrocket. There was a ton of broken glass on the ground.
So we walked around downtown for a bit, marveling at how weird it was to see the streets so deserted (this was between 6 and 7pm yesterday). The cops looked very intense in their riot gear, and I felt kind of bad for them, cause it was freaking humid out. Then, we went over to Chloe's and ate chicken burgers and watched the news. We were very impressed with Police Cheif Blair's skillz.
Journalist: "Are you aware of the incidents [X], [Y] and [Z] involving police harming journalists?"
Blair: "Yes."
*Awkward silence*
Journalist: "... Are you going to comment?"
Blair: "No."

The double standard for police (not really emphasized by the above, but more of a slow burn throughout the night's news) is cray-cray. Either let them do their job or don't, but don't hinder them in every aspect of their work and then wonder why nothing's getting done. JFC.
ETA: Annnnd, while I was typing this, my Oma called saying she and her church group were advised to leave their habitual lunchtime Burger King because trouble is expected in the east end. WTFFFFFF, go be anarchists elsewhere plzkthx.
