LORD OF THE FLIES
Painted faces and long hair
Beast from water
Beast from air
See the fire burning bright
in the midst of this dark night.
Eyes aglow and faces twisted,
see this awesome havoc wreaked!
Once again, the veil is lifted:
change from man to boy to beast.
Shadows soar across the sky
stars are blacked out one by one
Hear the urgent voices cry
as all of Nature comes undone!
The tribal chant is getting louder,
power thrumming through each note.
Forests burn and mountains crumble,
red blood drips from the pig's throat.
Eyes demented now with bloodlust,
the victorious hunters roar!
All, once sane, now turns to madness
here upon this rocky shore.
Howls of joy and screams of pain,
the force of chaos is unleashed.
On the ground, the pig lies slain,
the gap between two worlds breached.
Panting breaths and gasps for air,
In the dim light, blue eyes glint.
A sharpened spear flies through the air:
A head impaled upon a stick.
Ash to ashes, dust to dust.
The fire dims, the end is nigh.
A sense of dread oer'rides the lust,
Watch the embers fade and die.
Note: Not many people I know liked this book - they claimed Golding was too pessimistic, and the storyline was boring. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Golding, although pessimistic, definitely has an interesting (valid) point about human naure. As for boring: how much more suspenseful can you get than your one-time friends chasing you around an island, ready to stab your guts out?
