I just needed to put this somewhere other than my head for a while. There will be posts not dedicated to wangst! Just... not quite yet.

I'm getting a headstart on the mental health/body image issues this year... #overachiever :-/ )

(and two weeks, two weeks until I go back to Kingston for Don Training and then it will be September and I will be insured and I will finally be able to talk about this to someone who at least gets paid to put up with my shit)

What ho, LJ-land! Things have happened since my last post - many Things, including but not limited to: two countries*, one exam, one epic Megaupload fiasco (? I'm still catching up on this) and Other Stuff which I will inevitably forget to post about, and that's fine. (But my God, I still haven't made my New Year's Resolutions yet - maybe on the bus Friday, with Hanna...)

UNDER THE CUT: Happy Discworld blather and POSSIBLE TMI re: food/body image/Sarah being just plain weird and annoying )
In Finnish: Hyvää Joulua!

We just got back from Hanna's grandparents' place, where, in true grandparent style, we were plied with all sorts of delicious Finnish Christmas food (I took pictures of every dish - all will be up on DUTCH MY LIFE once I have access to my laptop again). We had rice porridge (delicous!) and fruit stew, pulla (little balls of sweetbread), jouluutorttu (flaky pastries filled with plum jam), taatelikakku (date cake) and rahkapulla (cream-filled sweetbread with lemon and raisins). I also learned how to say "thank you" - kiitos

Hanna's family was there: her siblings came with their children (adroable!). Her whole family is apparetly coming over to her house tonight, so I will get to meet even more Finnish people (and fail to communicate, due to the language barrier - but I have developed he general strategy of thanking everyone copiously and smiling all the time - seems to have worked so far...)

Can't really believe it's actually Christmas, though! I donät know where the time went! But last night, we decorated the Christmas tree, and today, we laid out the presents under it (literally a mountian of them - feels just like home!). I hope Hanna and her family like the gifts I brought- I'm thankful that the Gluhwein survived the trip here.

Suffice to say, life is quite exciting at the moment, and I feel so lucky and blessed to be able to celebrate Christmas with Hanna and her family - not that I don't miss mine, but seriously, this is something special! :D

HYVÄÄ JOULUA TO EVERYONE :D
I made Red Lentil and Squash Curry Stew tonight! Slightly pathetic, yet true: this is the first time I've actually made an honest to God meal for myself in, um, ever. Usually when I go grocery shopping or cook, I go by what's cheapest and what I know how to do. This is the main reason why most of my culinary know-how revolves around a) toast and b) toast. But tonight was different! I even followed the damn recipe. It looked like sludge (so, uh, no pictures), but it didn't taste half bad and I have the leftovers for lunch or something tomorrow. Is this what adulthood feels like?

In other news, a) I WILL UPDATE TUMBLR, I SWEAR, but b) EXAMS ARE HEREEEEEE OH GOD WHY. :/ The epic study program has commenced. Also, the drinking. We literally have a drinking contest going on right now. It is starting as I type. BUGGER ALLE THIS FOR A LARKE, I do not think my studying will succeed tonight.

I sent my dad a text at seven am this morning saying Happy Father's Day! :D You're awesome!. This afternoon, we suntanned on the back porch together, reading magazines. The pork tenderloin I'm making for dinner is finishing in the oven as I type. Hopefully it will be tasty, and then I can declare this Father's Day a success. (Wish me luck: I also made rice balls for the first time, because we're having Grandma and Grandpa over for dinner, and I like to cement my Favourite Grandchild status whenever I can. The rice balls look ridiculous - and not in the good way - but I'm hoping the grandparental instincts of "My offspring's offspring are so talented!" will shine through and save the day.)

Completely unrelated, last night Chloe, her friend Melissa and I watched Brokeback Mutants X-Men: First Class again. Equally enjoyable the second time, and now I am going to read fic FOREVER! (Seriously, beautiful angsty, slashy goodness is beautiful.)
Sunday! The baking continues!

Spent all day in the kitchen today. I'm such a good housewife. I have baked many things!

Apple and smoked cheddar scones )
What does steamed fish with spinach and black bean sauce; rosemary beer bread; and grilled peaches with yogurt and honey sound like?

I call it success! Om nom nom. I think Greek yogurt is my new love.

In other news, I am watching the hockey game. TENSIONNNNNNN OMG
Well, I'm back in Kingston. Pleasantly surprised to find that the apartment is a) still standing, and b) relatively clean. Right now I'm just taking a minute to be slightly overwhelmed by the amount of work I've neglected over reading week: not merely readings, but also a lab report (I think I need to scrap what I have so far and start over again, because things are looking wonky, arrgh), a German assignment, and the part where I have until Friday to make a decision about going on exchange.

Thankfully, with the power of To-Do lists, I have Plans, which will hopefully allow me to take the stick out of my ass so I can pretend to be Normal. Also, coffee. There is nothing that cannot be conquered by the addition of More Caffeine.

The weekend was totally worth the imminent stress, though. On Saturday, I slept in (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was glorious~), baked banana bread and hung out with Eden before having dinner with the grandparents. Later, Chloe came over and we skyped [livejournal.com profile] cherishedsaulie  and watched the vlogbrothers until two in the morning. I HAVE BEEN CONVERTED. Extremely belated though I am, ;alskdjf;asd I have oodles of love for them now. Today, we had the relatives over for Oma's birthday lunch. I do not think my waistline was helped by the entire table of chicken rice/chow mein/salmon OMG I devoured, but I'm reminding myself that university fare starts again on Monday, so it's completely justified.

OH AND BY THE WAY, WHITE COLLAR EP 2.14 IS THE MOST AMAZING THING EVER OH MY GOD IT IS LIKE FIC ON TELEVISION.

One last tidbit and I'm done: THE EAGLE - NOW IN LATIN
LOL FOREVER @ THE EAGLE FIC SENT TO ME BY C. I JUST. I JUST. I AM STILL LOLING ABOUT THAT MOVIE. CHANNING TATUM'S ACTING FACE, YOU GUYS. THE NOT-EVEN-SUBTEXT-ANYMORE. THE FACT THAT THERE WERE NO FEMALE ACTORS CAST. NO WORDS FOR THE LULZ. I MIGHT NEED A WHILE TO RECOVER.

(Reading Week is going by waaaaaaaaaaay too quickly. Definitely going to fail the Research Methods lab report OTL. OTOH, I had glorious French Toast today for lunch, and Oma's pirozhki for dinner - the food of the gods, y'all - so I suppose that it's a fair trade-off for now.)

WAIT WAIT WAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT OH FUCK I SHOULD BE DISOWNED FOR MY AWFUL AWFUL SLOWNESS ON THE UPTAKE BUT YOU GUYS WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTT THE FUCK OHM Y GOD JAMIE BELL = BILLY ELLIOT WHAT THE ACTUAL FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK

BILLY ELLIOT WHAT HAVE YOU DONE AND Y U LOOK SO DERPY NAO YOU WERE SUCH A CUTE KID
This weekend has been full of Events! Which were Eventful!

Well, ok, not really, but my definition of "Eventful" is "did I get to leave the library?", so I judge accordingly.

I'm not scared of your dirrrrrrty love... )

*I've been fruitlessly searching google for a picture/video to link to, but alas! I don't even know the technical term for it. Googling "Baryshnikov jump" yields nothing but biographies and facebook.

OH WAIT: here, I think, is an example, 0:27-0:30. SUFFICE TO SAY: EXCITEMENT.
Well, that was an eventful weekend! Not all in good ways, unfortunately, but c'est la vie. To be fair, everything but the ending was fantastic.

#OHDEER )

I'm trying really hard not to freak out about things, but I had my day planned out today, and I'm really fucking pissed at the money, and I feel awful cause all I've done this weekend is eat like a fucking pig and just. Fuck.

But for the most part, the weekend was awesome, and it was really nice to see Fatima and meet her housemates and everything. So. I'm glad I got to go.

ETA: I am back from work, and semi-caught up with my study schedule. It'll have to do.

ETA2: OH FUCK ME SIDEWAYS, I JUST REALIZED I STILL HAVE NOWHERE TO LIVE NEXT YEAR A;SDLFKA;SK FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU ok that's it, kicking myself off the internet before I actually go crazy.
*YAWN*

Hooray for ridiculously early bedtimes! OMG so excited for sleep :) (now watch sleep not come till three in the morning or something...) But. Today was good.

I had work today - last Saturday shift, what. I will be working tomorrow and on Monday, and then not for another month, depending on when shifts are available. At least after next weekend I won't have to miss any more dance classes. Anyway, today's shift was deadly boring but nice. The librarians are really nice, and the other page I work with is great. Also, one of the librarians gave me a belated Christmas card (!) with Ferrero Rocher chocolates attached (!!). It completely made my day; I didn't realize that I merited Christmas cards, but wow! (And one of the other staff members brought in a box of Tim's donuts... OM NOM NOM). On a completely random topic, I've become really interested in books on dance (mostly, let it be said, for the pictures). I keep skulking off into corners to read about Rudolf Nureyev when I should be shelf-reading.

In the evening, Kim and Frank were supposed to come over (*gasp* A proper dinner party?! Never!), but alas! Our plans were derailed by Frank's untimely illness. So Iqra and I ended up going first to a small coffee shop and then to The Brass, which is a pub not far from our house (hell, what am I saying? Nothing is far from our house here). The food was good, if uneventful. Actually, no, that's a lie. It was the best fucking chicken wrap of my life, oh my God. Like. OM NOM NOM, REAL FOOD instead of our regular carbs-and-water fare. There were even vegetables; it was delicious.

The walk home was fucking freezing, holy balls. I ended up jogging in a strange half-shuffle, pitched forward slightly to protect myself from the wind, and generally moving in the most awkward way possible. I couldn't feel my toes - it was colder than Collingwood during the ski season.

Me: "Thank God we're home!"
Iqra: *faceplants onto radiator*

Now I am so, so ready for bed. Tackled some biopsyc reading tonight and a bit of Turcaret during my lunch break; fuck yeah academia. BRB SLEEPING FOREVER~
